the Comitium

The paved floor in the front of the curia - senate building - is the comitium. It was the meeting place of the Roman people. Comitium means 'meeting place'. A forum can be found in other ancient towns but a comitium is typically Roman.
Romulus and Tatius, the leader of the Sabines, were the first people who officially met here. At this place they made an agreement about a future alliance of their people. The comitium was a flat, square place. At its largest it must have been 90 by 90 metres. Near the comitium there are two outstanding objects, the ficus ruminalis and the rostra.
